Langthang valley trek
Langthang is a narrow valley just south of the Tibetan border. This trek is quieter in comparison to the EBC trek or the Annapurna Circuit yet still offers striking views of the Langthang Himalayas and also Tibet. You will trek along the Langthang river through rhododendron, pine and bamboo forests. Cross streams and waterfalls and trek through high alpine meadows and yak pastures of Kyangjin Gompa. On this trek, you will get the opportunity to visit the Langthang village and explore the charming valley. Immerse in the Tamang culture and support them rebuild their livelihoods after the devastating earthquake in 2015.
You will arrive in Kathmandu, a beautiful and chaotic city. After briefing your trek to you, you will have the rest of the day in your hands and you can spend it the way you wish exploring. An overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
7-8 hours, Camp alt. 1550 m
As you drive the north-western hills of Kathmandu you will see beautiful scenes of snow-clad Mt. Annapurna II, Manaslu, Ganesh Himalayas, and other peaks. You will drive past hills, villages, and rivers, across foothills and ridges through Trishuli bazaar. You will make a stop at Trishuli Bazaar before heading to Dhunche. You will then head on down to Syabru Bensi overnight.
6-7 hours, 1070 m ascent, Camp alt. 2380 m
You will have to cross the Bhote Koshi river flowing from Tibet following Langtang Khola. After paying a visit to the Gompa of Guru Rinpoche you will walk into the town of Langtang Khola. Then the trail gradually ascends up to Bamboo and through sub-tropical forests of oak, maple, spruce, blue pine, and fir. These forests are home for wild boars, yellow-throated martens, Langurs, red pandas, and Himalayan black bears. Follow the trail up to Rimche (2400 m) and then end at Lama hotel. Overnight stay at the hotel.
4-5 hours, 1075 m ascent, Camp alt. 3455 m
The trail starts off on a gentle slope slowly gaining in steepness. You will walk through wild forests of hemlocks, oaks, maples, and rhododendrons over the Langtang Khola. You will soon catch sight of the snow-clad peaks and glimpses of Mt. Lantang Lirung (7244 m). You will then come across the luscious meadows of Ghora Tabela (2992m). Keep ascending gradually and continue on the trail through yak pastures, the helipad, and Tamang settlements. You will finally reach the Langtang village (3430 m) after crossing streams and prayer wheels. This village is the headquarters of the Langtang National Park. Explore this village and notice the Tibetan housing styles characterized by the flat roofs and intricately carved windows. Dwell among yaks and wild goats as you explore the valley harvested with buckwheat, wheat, barley, and potatoes. Overnight at Langtang valley.
2-3 hours, 415 m ascent, Camp alt. 3870 m
Today you will climb a ridge, it’s top marked by a large chorten (temple). The trail then passes by a mani wall and crosses a stream bringing you to the village of Mundu (3543 m). After crossing more small streams you will finally reach the Kyanjin Gompa. You will also see the icefall from the peaks of Langtang Lirung and Kimshung. You will get the opportunity to taste cheese and curd made from yak milk because of the famous Cheese factory here operated by the government. Then after a short break, you can explore the region and absorb the beautiful vistas of Langtang Lirung (7246 m), Genjempol, Kyangjin Ri (4750m), Tsergo Ri (5000 m), Ganja La (5160 m), Langshisa Ri (6427 m) and more. Overnight at Kyanjin Gompa.
Today is a rest day which we will treat as an acclimatization day, with trekking. Depending on your interest, you may walk up the moraine and see the majestic Langtang Lirung or ascend the Kyanjin Ri at 4350 m and Tserko Ri at 5000 m. You can also opt to do an extra leg to Langshisa Kharka. Overnight at Kyanjin Gompa.
6 hours, 1490 m descent, Camp alt. 2380 m
Enjoy your breakfast with an amazing view of snow-capped mountains. After breakfast, you will retrace your steps through Langtang Khola and Langtang village, on to Ghora Tabela. You will make a stop for lunch and then continue onwards to Lama Hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
4-5 hours, 1070 m descent, Camp alt. 1550 m
After breakfast today you will head on down to Syabru Bensi from where you started your trek. As you reach this village you can have a deeper insight into the customs and culture of the ethnic group, Tamang of Nepal. Overnight at Syabru Bensi.
You will drive back to Kathmandu today alongside the Trishuli River. You will reach your hotel in Kathmandu and the rest of the day is in your own hands. You can explore the city and do some souvenir shopping.
Depart from Kathmandu International airport to your destination.
