When to go

In general the best times for rafting and kayaking in Nepal is from September to early December, and March to early June.

March to May March to May is a summer season characterized by long and hot days. As the lowers water flows the rapids are lower than they are from September to November. The rivers tend to rise again in May with the pre-monsoon storms and some melting of snow in the Himalayas.

June to August June to August is a monsoon with heavy rains. The rivers become 10 times bigger and can flood with 60-80 times the low-water levels, making most rivers insanely turbulent. During this time, only parts of the Seti river, Upper Sun Kosi and Trisuli can be commercially run.

September to early October and May to June From September to early October and May to June, rivers can be extremely high with monsoon run-off. Due to high flows it is potentially the most dangerous
times to be on a river. If you attempt expeditions at this time, you require a very experienced rafting company with an intimate knowledge of the river and you need to have very experienced team.

Mid-October to November As this time of year is warm and settled weather, runs are quite exciting. Its one of the most popular times to raft or kayak.

December December is a time to consider shorter rafting trip as the days are short with start of winter. Many of the rivers become too cold to enjoy unless you have a wetsuits.

What to bring

If you book an organized rafting or kayaking trip, the company will provide all specialized equipment – such as tents, roll-top dry bags to keep your gear dry even if the vessel flips. You will only need light clothing with warm clothes for nights. It is essential to pack a swimsuit, a towel, a sunhat, insect repellent, sunscreen and light tennis shoes or sandals. If you come in winter, you will need thermal clothing, especially on rivers like the Bhote Kosi.

Check if your rafting company provides paddle jackets and wetsuits. Waterproof camera containers are useful to take photos along the river.

Safety is the most important part of any river trips or expeditions. Sadly in Nepal, there are no minimum safety conditions set by any official entities. This makes crucial to choose a professional rafting and kayaking company.

Your guide should give you a comprehensive safety talk and paddle training before you start your rafting adventure.
